Grief & hope....

When I look back on the past year I feel an intense mixture of emotions. So much has happened that often times I feel I have lived five years in the course of just one. 2010 started out as a year filled with hope as we embarked on our first round of IVF, and that hope only grew as we experienced our first pregnancy. We learned that we would be having a daughter, we celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary and it seemed that all was right with the world. And then we learned in an intimate way that in a matter of one day the world you once knew can come crashing down.

With that day everything changed. Our daughter, Lillian Grace, was born, lived, and died. We existed in a surreal place in which we never could have imagined. A place in which you plan your child’s funeral. You stand before your closest family with your daughter’s urn beside you and think this just all seems so unreal. We became acquainted with grief on a deep level. We felt sadness, despair, and wondered how we would move forward. We learned there is a whole world of other couples who have experienced this same type of loss and grief through other blogs, and we felt not so completely alone with our sadness. On the difficult days as I returned to work and saw the rest of the world was continuing forward oblivious to my deep loss, what got me through was that knowledge that I was not alone and that many of you knew my pain. We began to pick up the pieces and we learned how to incorporate the grief into our daily lives; how to move forward even when it’s the last thing you want to do. Our pastor said something really poignant that stuck with my husband. He read from the famous Psalm, “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…” and focused in on the word walk. Don’t run. Don’t stop and sit down. Walk through your grief and your pain, and I think we’ve tried really had to do just that.

Thankfully that is not where our story ends. Although 2010 as a whole was the worst and most painful year of our lives, there were glimpses of hope that began to reemerge and blessings that we never could have imagined that came into play. We learned of something called embryo donation and made the decision to place an ad on Miracles Waiting, and that is when, for the second time in a year, our lives were changed dramatically. We were contacted by a donor family who had seen my blog and knew our story. After many heartfelt e-mails this family came to visit us and the decision was made to move forward with open embryo adoption together. The hope this family brought us and the selfless gift they have given are something that will forever shape our lives. They are a part of our story now. This hope couldn’t have come at a better time; they gave us a lifeline when we needed it most. Sadly, we were about to be reminded again of how precarious this life can be. It was late in the day in October when one of my closest friends, Tiffany, called with the most unimaginable news. Her 4 ½ month old son was dead from SIDS. Again, grief was pushing its way into our lives; we were shaken and reminded of how little control we have to protect those we love. This year has been one of survival for many of us, and I am thankful we are all still standing and continuing in spite of all the pain that we have endured to feel hope that better days await us in 2011.

For us it is with mercy that this year began to come to a close. We had our first donor cycle FET and are now beginning the journey of a new pregnancy. We are different people as this year closes; we have felt more grief, compassion, and love in one year than we could have imagined. I will forever be thankful that you were all here walking beside us throughout the highs and lows of this past year. We hold so much hope that the New Year carries peace and dreams fulfilled for us and so many others.

Relief & Reassurance….

I went into our appointment at the RE’s today fully expecting to hear bad news and thankfully was pleasantly shocked to hear good news! Since the only time I bled with my first pregnancy was the day I lost Lily, I couldn’t help but associate this with another loss and thought I was beginning to miscarry. It was such a relief to hear the doctor say that the baby is measuring right on track at 6wks 3 days. We also got to hear the heartbeat which was 120bpm. We felt so relieved and for now feel like we can relax at least a little bit! She was able to see the area near the placenta where the bleeding was coming from and said that it will likely resolve itself soon. It was a really small 1/2cm spot. We’re scheduled to return to the RE’s for another ultrasound on January 10th at which point I’ll be 8wks 2 days, and if everything looks good at that appointment then we’ll graduate to an OB. If all goes well I think its going to be a very long nine months!!!

Six months and counting…

I know that like us, many of my fellow bloggers spent yesterday feeling the weight of what could have been their baby’s first Christmas. It was hard not to feel the sadness intertwined with the joy of spending the holiday with our families, and although we are thankful our families remembered Lily in special ways, it was still heartbreakingly sad to think about how different this year could have been. I hope that all of you who were without your children this Christmas felt some moments of peace and were able to honor the memory of your child within your family’s traditions. Tomorrow marks six months since Lily’s death, and the grief of her loss still weighs heavily. I think the emotions of the holiday season add to the grief, seeing the joy in other children’s eyes and knowing we will never experience that with her hurts deeply.

We also received an upsetting surprise Christmas morning when I woke up to spotting. The bleeding remains light today, but is more than yesterday and we can’t help but worry. We know at this stage it could be implantation bleeding or a whole host of other things, but we’re also preparing ourselves for the reality that it might not. Since I experienced absolutely no bleeding during my pregnancy with Lily, it’s especially troubling. It seems especially cruel that this all started on a day when we were already feeling the weight of Lily being unable to share the holiday with us…merry freaking Christmas.   We know that either way there is nothing that can be done at this stage. Our ultrasound appointment is scheduled for Tuesday morning so we will know more at that time. Until then, we wait anxiously trying to prepare our hearts for either outcome, hoping that tears of joy are on the agenda instead of tears of sadness.

Beta #2....

We had a long weekend of waiting. Had my lab work done on Saturday morning, but because of the weekend the donor clinic didn’t receive the results until today. On Sunday morning, we received a call from the clinic to let us know that they were still awaiting the results, and in all likelihood we wouldn’t be hearing anything until Monday. She scared us though because her voice was so serious and had the tone of someone about to give awful news, so of course before I heard what it was I was preparing myself for the worst news. Needless to say, it was nice of her to call, but the whole thing brought me back down a bit and reminded me of the reality of the situation, that we are still in a precarious time, and that things can change in an instant. Finally, got the good news late this afternoon; for now we’ve passed milestone number two! Beta level from Saturday was 1,931 and my progesterone level was 32; the nurse said a normal progesterone level at this point is anywhere from 15-48 so both numbers are right where they should be. I’m scheduled to have my first ultrasound December 29th, and hopefully we’ll hear a heartbeat at that time. So as of today I am 5wks 2 days pregnant!

A fellow blogger who has been through loss and is now beginning the journey of pregnancy again inspired me to focus on the hope and try not to allow the fear of what could happen to be my main focus. I’d highly recommend stopping over to Riding the IVF Rollercoaster so you can read this beautifully written post in its entirety, but I had to share my favorite part. She said, “Whether the tears that come when this pregnancy ends are because of joy or despair, it is love that will cause them. So I tried to concentrate on that rather than the fear.” Reading those words made so much sense to me. No matter how this pregnancy ends, whether it be with a healthy beautiful baby or before it should, there will be tears of love for this child and that is ultimately what I need to hold to. The love and hope with which this life was created and all that it holds for the future.

Lastly, it is with great joy that I ask you all to stop over and celebrate with Trinity from Three is a Magic Number as she just welcomed her long awaited son into this world! She & I started out this journey together and she has been an amazing friend and support to me over this past year. I am filled with happiness for her and feel hope that this time the universe got it right. Congratulations my lovely friend, enjoy your newest hard earned title!

Beta level #1...

Got the call late this afternoon that my first beta level is 937! I’ll have my next lab work done on Saturday morning, both the HCG/beta level and progesterone levels will be tested at that time. The doctor has instructed me to continue on both the daily Progesterone injections and Estrace pills twice a day until 12wks of pregnancy. Trying hard to focus on being in the moment, continuing to recognize what I can control and what I cannot. And so it is in this moment I find myself feeling thankful to have passed another milestone & looking with hope towards the future.

Baby steps....

Oddly enough it was my husband who was dropping not-so-subtle clues this weekend that he’d love it if I’d POAS (pee on a stick). I was happily living in my in between place, hopeful that a positive result would await us at the end of the 2ww, but terribly frightened of a BFN which caused me to think it would be better to wait just in case. Well, as you can probably guess at this point, I gave in after all and decided to POAS Saturday morning. I was terrified to go look, but was thankfully met with those elusive two beautiful lines! And just to be thorough I took another test on Sunday morning and was again met with this lovely response…

I have my first beta draw on Thursday so hopefully we’ll get a good strong number that continues to increase. We’re cautiously optimistic at this point. As we learned the hard way during my last pregnancy, we have many, many milestones to pass before bringing home a healthy live baby, but as the Chinese proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Those of you who know us IRL, please no comments on fb...we have a long ways to go before we'll be announcing it in that arena!

Peace and letting go of control….

In the most recent RESOLVE e-newsletter that I received the day of our FET, the following quote stood out, “every piece of the universe, even the tiniest little snow crystal, matters somehow. I have a place in the pattern, and so do you” ~T.A. Baron. As we move slowly into the two week wait, I’m trying hard to rationalize in my mind that whatever will be, will be, and that as much as I like to think I have control I do not, that at this point success is up to nature and God to decide. I have been reminding myself frequently of the serenity prayer, accepting that I do not have the ability to direct the outcome of this cycle, and that either way the success or failure of this transfer is not just mine to own. The only thing I know I can control at this juncture is my mind, and I’m trying my best to hold to peace and cautious optimism through the rest of this waiting game.

We flew back home yesterday and are feeling incredibly thankful for the time we were able to spend with our donor family. We actually got to spend an entire day with them in NYC and had an amazing time bonding with them and getting to know each other more. It’s hard to believe we only found each other a few short months ago; it feels like we’ve been friends for much, much longer. I found myself thinking the day of transfer that although I will always be saddened Lily is no longer with us, it’s amazing to think that we may have the opportunity to parent a child that we would never have known otherwise. That if the donor mother would have never seen my blog and ran across our ad on Miracles Waiting we may never have known this family and, potentially, our future children. It’s really mind blowing to think about!

I’m constantly amazed at this unbelievable ALI (adoption/loss/infertility) community and the incredibly strong women that all share their difficult journeys with grace and inspiration and cheer each other on in the process. Thank you all so much for the support, love, and prayers you’ve sent our way this past week. You, my friends, are the most amazing support group I could ever hope to have.
