We’re beginning to settle into our new routines and adapting to life in our new city. In the midst of the move I got out of the habit of cooking Little Man’s baby food and have since gotten in the habit of buying it. One thing I absolutely love about living in a large city is the availability of good food, shops, and a fabulous farmers market. For the first time we’re in close proximity to a Whole Foods, and they have an incredible selection of baby food as well. We’ve started introducing stage three foods, and although he was a bit resistant to the varying textures initially, he’s starting to be more accepting of this. He absolutely loves his morning baby oatmeal and really is pretty good at eating most fruits and veggies. He currently has two bottom teeth and four top teeth. Any tips or tricks for introducing textures further? He’s still nursing and at this point and I’m planning to likely continue through the summer and then begin to get more serious about weaning. I never had expected to breastfeed for a year (and definitely not past it), but it’s been such an incredible bonding experience for us and continues to bring him so much comfort. I know there has been a lot said in the past week or so regarding this topic and I loved this post by Rage Against the Minivan, I think she sums it up well. There are far more important things for us to worry about instead of tearing each other down. I know at times I get caught up in little parenting decisions that really aren’t all that important, and her post really does offer a generous dose of perspective.
Hard to believe Little Man’s birthday will be coming up in a little over a month! We’ve been starting to discuss how we want to celebrate his special day. Really at this point we’ve only nailed down one detail, we saw all these great first birthday cake recipes for little ones and are planning to choose one of these to make for Ian’s smash cake. Since we’re in our small temporary digs away from our immediate families we are trying to decide how we want to plan a party. Whether we want to try and plan a short weekend trip home or if we want to just have a small get together at a location in the new city with whoever is able to make it. For those who have planned a first birthday party, what would you say was your favorite part of the celebration and what would you change if you could?
It’s been almost a year since our lives were changed for the better in such a beautiful way. Crazy what a difference a year can make!
To close with a little blog love…these were two incredibly poignant beautiful posts I’ve read recently; if you haven’t read them I’d encourage you to check them out. The first is written by Glennon at Momastery. It’s long but so worth the read; the letter to her son is one of the most heartwarming posts I’ve read. It is a love that I wish more children & adults received in this world.
I know Mother’s Day has already passed, but a friend shared this post with me and it’s such a great way to not leave out and isolate so many women on Mother’s Day that might not fall into the formal title our society is familiar with. I urge everyone to remember this in the years to come.

Wow ... ONE! Happy birthday, a bit early, to Ian!
N. started to transition to more textured foods by less-blended versions of her previous meals ... and we've tried feeding her all sorts of things. She's kind of picky about texture, though ... loves black beans and cheerios and avocadoes and most fruit, but refuses a LOT of other things that our I. ate at her age. I think I need to remember to keep it in perspective ... that they're not like this forever, and that even at age one, they're still trying this eating thing out!!
It is so hard to believe that Ian is almost a year old!! Where does the time go??
We went on a trip a few months back and I started buying food then and basically never stopped...it's so much easier. We have just started introducing stage three jars and more finger foods as well. She was rejecting a lot of things initially but I just kept trying a little bit every day and she is really coming around to more things.
I hope that the rest of your transition goes smoothly!
definitely can't believe it is almost time for his bday. crazy how time flies. could you please send me your new address? i would like to see little man something.
Whaaa? How can this be? ONE???? What a wild ride, that first year. :) WRT to Arlo's first birthday party, I think the most favorite thing I did (and what was also a fun way to engage far away family) was to make him a time capsule. We simply asked folks to contribute whatever they might like--no specific parameters or anything. Folks really put a lot of thought and heart into their contributions, some of which were wrapped as presents and will be a mystery to us all until Arlo's 18th birthday when we plan to have him open it. I also made one of the cakes from WBF. :)
You know what fell to the wayside during our recent move? CDing. It took me about two weeks to get back into the full rhythm of wearing and washing. I felt so guilty, but so relieved at the same time while using sposies. Moving is hard stuff! You just gotta do the best you can.
And AMEN to living closer to Whole Foods! We have a Trader Joe's close to us, too, and it's been a total quality of life improver. :)
Rebecca, I'm so glad to hear that you are settling in and faring well in your new city (and having a Whole Foods nearby really does make it easier to feed a baby well!). What a great post by Rage Against The Minivan. She summed it up perfectly and I appreciated the points she made very much.
A year. Wow. A year already since your little man came into the world? I'm so glad he is here, and that he has both of you. Sending you all much love as this very big date approaches.
It's great to read your update. I'm glad that you three are settling nicely into your new home and city. As far as I'm concerned, a farmer's market is essential. We try to buy the bulk of our food there. I'm glad there is one so close to you now. And a Whole Foods (in my city, we have the Stone Store, a little natural foods store with a good selection and a great name :)
Is Ian really about to have his first birthday? Wow! How time flies. I'm looking forward to reading about his first birthday celebration.
Warm hugs to you, my friend.
Thank so much for being here for me. Your comment holds a lot of weight for me. I have always listened to you and heard you in an easy way.
I feel really prepared for my discussion tomorrow around the donation. Thank you so much for directing me to your donor family blog. Pow.
Wow. Your story just seems too incredible. I am sure it is no accident we know each other, is it?
Kisses to your fella. Thanks again.
I loved that post too. It was actually a good friend of mine's friend who wrote that, small world! I look forward to reading back through your blog and catching up. Have so much fun planning your little guy's first birthday! I'm starting to wrap my head around ideas for my daughter's birthday in August too; it can be overwhelming!
